Eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations (2007-2016)
BAN Ki-moon was the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations. His priorities have been to mobilize world leaders around a set of new global challenges, from climate change and economic upheaval to pandemics and increasing pressures involving food, energy and water. He has sought to be a bridge-builder, to give voice to the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people, and to strengthen the Organization itself. Mr. Ban held office from on 1 January 2007 to 31 December 2016. On 21 June 2011, he was unanimously re-elected by the General Assembly for a second mandate. One of the Secretary-General’s first major initiatives was the 2007 Climate Change Summit, followed by extensive diplomatic efforts that have helped put the issue at the forefront of the global agenda. Subsequent efforts to focus on the world’s main anti-poverty targets, the Millennium Development Goals, have generated more than $60 billion in pledges, with a special emphasis on Africa and the new Global Strategy on Women’s and Children’s Health. At the height of the food, energy and economic crises in 2008, the Secretary-General successfully appealed to the G20 for a $1 trillion financing package for developing countries and took other steps to guide the international response and protect the vulnerable and poor.

Ben NELSON is Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Minerva, and a visionary with a passion to reinvent higher education. Prior to Minerva, NELSON spent more than 10 years at Snapfish, where he helped build the company from startup to the world’s largest personal publishing service. With over 42 million transactions across 22 countries, nearly five times greater than its closest competitor, Snapfish is among the top e-commerce services in the world. Serving as CEO from 2005 through 2010, NELSON began his tenure at Snapfish by leading the company’s sale to Hewlett Packard for $300 million.
Prior to joining Snapfish, NELSON was President and CEO of Community Ventures, a network of locally branded portals for American communities.
NELSON’s passion for reforming undergraduate education was first sparked at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, where he received a B.S. in Economics. After creating a blueprint for curricular reform in his first year of school, NELSON went on to become the chair of the Student Committee on Undergraduate Education (SCUE), a pedagogical think tank that is the oldest and only non-elected student government body at the University of Pennsylvania.
President Henk PIJLMAN
Hanze University of Applied Sciences
Henk PIJLMAN (1955) received a masters degree in both History and Frisian at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. After his studies, he worked as a history teacher and was a member of the city council of Groningen on behalf of D66, the Progressive Liberal Democrats party. From 1990 to 2000, Mr PIJLMAN was the alderman for education, sports, culture and governmental reform. As an alderman, he was involved in in bringing the Italian cycling race Giro d’Italia to Groningen and in the planning and construction of a nature reserve near the city of Groningen. He also took the initiative to develop community schools in the Netherlands.
Mr PIJLMAN became a member of the Executive Board of Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen in 2000. He has been the chairman since 2004.
Henk PIJLMAN is a member of the Dutch Senate and sits on the supervisory board of the Groninger Museum, The North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra and the New Energy Coalition.
President CHO Dong-Sung

He received his Doctoral Degree from Harvard Business School in 1977. He was Professor of Strategy at two institutions: Seoul National University in Seoul for 36 years and Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business in Beijing for 2 years.
Since July 2016, he is serving Incheon National University as its 15th President. At INU he has implemented innovative projects on “Focused Research University” in research, “Matrix College” in education, “Tri-versity” and “International Teacher’s License” in social service. He teaches an undergraduate course “Creative Start-up” to promote start-ups of students.
He was a visiting professor at Harvard Business School, University of Michigan, Boston University, Duke University, INSEAD, Helsinki School of Economics (now Aalto University), University of Sydney, the University of Tokyo, Hitotsubashi University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, and Nankai University.
He conducted research into strategy, globalization, sustainability, design, and creativity. He published 115 academic papers in major journals. Among the 68 books that he authored or coauthored are 17 English titles and 5 Chinese titles. He also wrote 3 novels. He had consulted the governments of Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Honduras, United Arab Emirates, and China to increase the level of national competitiveness of the respective countries.
President of Korea awarded him “Order of Service Merit-Yellow Stripes.” President of Finland awarded him “The Knight, First Class of the Order of the White Rose of Finland.”
He received an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy from Aalto University, Helsinki, and another from Inje University, Busan.
President KIM Doh-Yeon

Dr. KIM Doh-Yeon is the 7th President of Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH). He received his B.E. from Seoul National University, M.S. from KAIST, and Ph.D. from Blaise Pascal University in France in materials science and engineering.
Before joining POSTECH, Dr. KIM had held various academic positions. He served as the director of the Creative Research Center for Microstructure Science of Materials and as the dean of the College of Engineering at Seoul National University. He worked also as the president of the University of Ulsan.
As a scholar in materials science and engineering, Dr. KIM is known for his research on the effect of interface structure on the microstructural evolution of ceramic materials. Dr. KIM also led the National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK) as its president.
Dr. KIM has been a leader in Korea’s policy-making goals to advance science and technology as the minister of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and as the chairman of the National Science & Technology Council.
Admired as a distinguished scholar and devoted leader, he was awarded the Order of Science and Technological Merit from the Korean Government and the NAEK Young Engineer Award.

Alternative Ranking Metrics Based on Real Impact
Professor Emeritus MOON Hwy-Chang will introduce an idea for a new university ranking system that is quite different from the existing ones. Based on the new system, he will review the factors that define the “World’s Universities with Real Impact (WURI)” that emphasize: 1) innovative approaches to research and education, rather than conventional ways of producing research papers and teaching classes; 2) value-creating start-ups, rather than traditional job employment; and 3) social responsibility, ethics, and integrity, rather than skills for material success.
Presdient CHUN Ho-Hwan

Dr. CHUN Ho-Hwan, a professor of Department of Architecture and Ocean Engineer has been serving a position of a president of Pusan National University since 2016. He has led two major national projects related to ships and offshore plants to Pusan National University and attracted over 70 billion won in research funding. It contributed greatly to the improvement of international competitiveness of shipbuilding field. From 2003 to 2004, he was appointed as a planning committee member of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy’s five-year plan for industrial technology innovation, as well as the advisory professor of Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He was also co-chaired by the Korea Science and Technology Council, where he received a Research Merit Medal from the Ministry of Education and Technology in 2011 thanks to his active roles in the fields of science and technology. He has been awarded excellent research achievements in the shipbuilding and maritime fields such as publishing more than 300 research papers and publishing 9 books since 2001 as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Korean Society and member of the Korea Engineering Academy since 2006. He was the Editor and Deputy Editor of the Journal of Marine Science Technology (published by Springer, SCIE), International Journal of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering (SCIE, SNAK). He also served as an academic director of the Korean Ocean Engineering Society and chief of the shipbuilding division of Korea from 2008 to 2013.

Dr. Diederich Bakker studied Business Administration, majoring in International Management, and holds a PhD in Marketing. His professional background lies in marketing communications and market research. Dr. Bakker has worked in the USA, Australia, Germany, France and the Netherlands. His personal research interests focus on international business, SMEs, market entry strategies, private label branding and Asian branding strategies. Dr. Bakker teaches marketing at the International Business School, Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, where he has worked since 2002. In 2016, he was appointed Professor of International Business at Hanze UAS.

Mr. Dilruk De SILVA is the campus Vice-President of Administrative Affairs at Ghent University Global Campus. He holds an MBA in International Business from the University of Chester, UK. Bachelor Degree in Marketing Management from the National University of Ireland, (UCD) Dublin. He has worked with the London School of Business and Finance, setting up its Asia Campus, International Division in Singapore. Mr. De SILVA also worked at Informatics Academy and BMC International College in Singapore. He has also worked in a consultancy capacity in the UK, and in Spain for Graduate Business Schools, Language Academies, and Education Platform to set up their internationalization initiatives.

James F LARSON currently chairs the Department of Technology and Society, State University of New York, Korea, where he also served as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost from 2015-2018. Prior to joining SUNY Korea, he was a Visiting Professor in the Graduate School of Science and Technology Policy at KAIST. He served as Associate and Deputy Director of the Fulbright Commission in Seoul for fourteen years and before that he taught at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Washington, Yonsei University, the National University of Singapore and the University of Colorado. At Colorado in 1995-96 he directed a major executive training program for Korea Mobile Telecom (now SK Telecom). At SUNY Korea his efforts aim to strengthen the university’s executive training and lifelong learning activities. He first came to Korea as an American Peace Corps volunteer, teaching university English for two years. His books include (with Oh) Digital Development in Korea: Building an Information Society (Routledge, 2011), which is soon to be released in a second edition with a new subtitle: Lessons for a Sustainable World; The Telecommunications Revolution in Korea (Oxford University Press, 1995), (with Park); Global Television and the Politics of the Seoul Olympics (Westview, 1993); and Television’s Window on the World: International Affairs Coverage on the U.S. Networks, (Ablex, 1984).
Prof. Dr. Sabuncuoğlu

Prof. Dr. Sabuncuoğlu is the founding Rector of Abdullah Gül University. He earned his BS, MS and PhD in industrial engineering successively from Middle East Technical University and Wichita State University. After working for different Multinationals and Institutes, he joined Bilkent University in 1990 as a faculty member while holding visiting positions at Carnegie Mellon University and Institut Français de Mécanique Avancée. His research interests include real-time scheduling, simulation optimisation, and applications of quantitative methods and cancer-related health-care problems. Prof. Dr. Sabuncuoglu also has significant industrial experience in aerospace, automotive, and military-based defense systems. He published over a hundred papers in international journals and conference proceedings, and edited five books. He is on the editorial board of a number of scientific journals in the areas of industrial engineering and operations research.
